Kyle started his racing career in 1980 at the age of 10.  Kyle and his dad ,Gary, raced karts from 1980- 1984, primarily Friday night at Kam Raceway in Hastings, NE and Saturday nights at Ymada Speedway just north of David City, NE. Gary's cousin, Don Anderson, from Central City, NE built the engines for Kyle and Gary's karts. Don truly loved racing and building engines, he even built a dyno for the kart engines.  Kent Tucker from Aurora, NE, late model racer and friend of the family, also worked on the engines and karts with Kyle and Gary. Gary won several races through out his karting career and Kyle would win numerous championships and over 100 kart races before stepping up into the stock cars at the age of 15.
