Berck Tames NCRA Late Models on the Highbanks - Inches Closer to Championship

By David Smith, Jr.

Belleville, Kansas (September 6, 2009) - Current series points leader Kyle Berck of Marquette, Nebraska inched one step closer to his second career series championship as he started on the outside front row, withstood a late race restart and went unchallenged the rest of the distance to pick up the O'Reilly/NCRA late model Hard Rock Hotel-Casino feature Sunday night, in front of a near capacity crowd, at the Belleville High Banks Speedway.

Corning, Iowas Bryant Goldsmith started the twenty lap Hard Rock Hotel-Casino feature on the pole but Berck and his Dorthy Lynch Salad Dressing/Strobel Construction sponsored Lazer chassis quickly jumped out front and set a torrid pace. Earl Kinderknecht fell into the third position while Jason Bodenhamer and Jason Friesen settled into the top five.

A couple of minor cautions slowed the pace the first half of the event but past the races midway point, the non-stop green flag action allowed Berck to pull away to near a full straightaway advantage over Goldsmith.

The final caution flag fell with three laps to go putting the front runners on Bercks rear bumper. But they were no match for the 2002 series champion on this night as he powered away to pick up his second series feature victory of the season and one step closer to the championship heading in to the annual "Cornhusker Classic" at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Nebraska on September 26th.

"I came in after the heat races and wanted to make a couple of minor changes but my crew told me to leave it alone," said an elated Berck in victory lane. "The car was absolutely on a rail tonight and worked perfect."

Goldsmith, aboard the Goldsmith Farms/Dupont Products sponsored Kuntz powered Schwartz Race Cars chassis held off eighth starting Al Purkey by a nosepiece to come home in the runner up position while Jason Frieson turned in a strong performance to finish fourth.

Four time and defending series champion Kelly Boen, going for a series tying eleventh victory on the season, worked through the night the hard way. After failing to participate during mandatory hot laps because of ignition problems, Boen was forced to start last in both his heat and the twenty-one car feature finale. Boen, aboard the Road Runner Fabrication/Peterson Fluid Systems sponsored Rocket chassis, rebounded to round out the top five.

The three, eight lap heat races for the twenty-one car field were won by Goldsmith, Berck and Kinderknecht.

As mentioned above, the 26th season of O'Reilly/NCRA late model action will come to a close on Saturday night, September 26th, with the annual running of the "Cornhusker Classic" at I-80 Speedway at Nebraska Raceway Park in Greenwood, Nebraska.

Meeker, Oklahoma (June 26, 2009) - Kyle Berck of Marquette, Nebraska fended off mid race challenges from Terry Phillips and then held off Jason Bodenhamer on a restart with four laps to go to win night one of the "Showdown in the Heartland" Cherokee Casino-Resort feature as the O'Reilly/NCRA and O'Reilly/ DIRTCar Series made their first ever appearance at Brill Motor Speedway in Meeker, Oklahoma on Friday night.

Eric Turner of Hermitage, Missouri and Ronnie Wallace of McCook, Nebraska started on the front row for the thirty lap feature with Turner taking the lead as the green flag fell. Fifth starting Berck worked his way into the third position followed by Phillips and Bodenhamer as the first lap was completed.

Turner opened a five car length advantage while behind him, Phillips aboard the Don Baab Motorsports/Andy's Frozen Custard GRT by Phillips made his way to the front, getting underneath Wallace and Berck to take over the runner up position.

In the meantime, Turner stretched out his lead to ten car lengths by lap five as Berck got around Wallace for the third position.

The first of three cautions fell on lap nine when Shawn Harker spun in turns three and four.

On the restart Berck got beside Turner entering turns one and two with Turner maintaining a slim one car length advantage. One lap later Berck, who was committed to the top in his Dorthy Lynch Salad Dressing/Strobel Construction sponsored Lazer Chassis, got around Turner again in turns one and two and took the lead for good down the backstretch to lead lap eleven.

Phillips would take over the runner up position one lap later while up front, Berck had quickly opened a twelve car length advantage. Lapped traffic looked to become a factor near the races midway point but a Greg Larsen spin in turn two brought out the caution.

The restart saw Phillips on the leaders bumper as the pair entered turns one and two with Berck using the top and Phillips down low. The pair battled side by side for several laps with Berck holding onto the slimmest of margins.

As both drivers kept committed to their lines on the track throughout the mid race portion, Berck changed things up by entering low in turns one and two to thwart any effort by Phillips to make a run. The leader quickly jumped back on the cushion allowing Phillips to get side by side with the leader with five laps to go.

Approaching lapped traffic on lap twenty-six coming down the front stretch, Berck and Phillips, who was looking to dive underneath the 2002 series champion, made contact sending Phillips to a spin and the nights final caution. Damage to Phillips ended his night with a 19th place finish.

While Bodenhamer was on the leaders bumper on the restart there was no catching Berck as he became the third different Cherokee Casino-Resort feature winner in as many races and take over the point lead. "I don't like winning that and there wasn't nothing intentional and I do apologize to Terry," said an exhausted Berck in victory lane. "This is our first time here and I didn't know anything about the track and kept the setup to be as versatile as it could be. I saw him (Phillips) down low once and went down there at one point but it just didn't feel comfortable and moved back up to the top. This was a good race track tonight and I am glad we made the trip down."

Berck, Leighton, Joldersma, Cook, and Kurtzer Pick Up I-80 Wins

I-80 Speedway kicked off its regular season in grand fashion Sunday evening May 3, 2009, treating fans to 5 classes of stock car racing on a nearly perfect dirt racing surface. The .4 mi high banked oval started off tacky, graduating to a smooth as glass dry slick racing surface on what turned out to be a cool, cloudy evening; weather that was very race engine friendly.

The touring SLMR Series headlined the 5 classes, with another stellar performance by Marquette, NE’s Kyle Berck, who wrestled the lead of the SLMR 25 lap A Feature from pole-sitter Mike Wiarda with 6 laps remaining. Wiarda in his # 1w used the low side of the track to lead 19 laps, but Berck’s flying # 14 was able to grab the lead in turn 4 after Berck tried a higher line. Most of the high-powered, high revving Super Late Models ran the low side, with several good battles for position throughout the 24 car field. Lightning Leon Zeitner came away 3rd, with son Justin Zeitner right behind, finishing 4th. 5th was Travis Dickes in the 21t. Al Zeitner, brother of Leon, Uncle of Justin brought his yellow # 76 home in 6th.
